WWII Captain America – Pencils
This is a sketch of WWII era Captain America that I put together using some pencil brushes in Photoshop. I went with a costume similar to what was show in the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, but I included the more iconic round shield. He’s caring the classic M1928A1 Thompson Submachine Gun with a 20 round box magazine.
For thew art it’s self I tried to do something with a more Kubert-esqe feel (not that I could actually pull anything off that remotely resembles that). I’ve always dug the way WWII comics we’re presented by Kubert from DC’s Sgt. Rock to his later, but similar work on the packaging illustrations for G.I.Joe’s Sgt. Savage line. It has a great gritty feel that adds a level of depth to the period of time and the conflict.
Captain America has always been my favorite Avenger and I love the more military aspects of the WWII uniform, so this was a fun project to work on. I got to relax and try working in a different style, and by the time I was done I felt like I had learned a lot by trying to replicate the technique.
