The Transforming Robot
This is a digital art commission piece that I did in January and February of 2012. For any one who has been fallowing my weekly “what I’m working on” section it took all of January and February to finish up. The finished piece will actually be in a different deco, but I’ll make sure to update this entry when I get some more information on that.
This image was created in Photoshop CS5.1 and a Wacom Intuos 4 Medium tablet. It was built in section for each body part and contain over 200 layers. It was also created at 300 dpi for relatively high print quality. I started the project by sketching out the basic design on bristol board, then I scanned it in to Photoshop an re-sized the art to suit the project requirements. Then I began the possess of laying down flats similarly to how I did them on the Cobra Commander art I did back in January. After the flats were laid down I wen back and added layering for shine and shadow to give each piece depth and a three dimensional look. After that came texturing, where I added scratches and grime using this Scratch Grunge Photoshop Brushes. Then the last touch is to add the additional line work you see all over him that separates the various panels of his body.
The idea behind this project was that it just need to be an awesome giant robot so I didn’t do a lot of work researching the car type or trying to make it match one of the Transformers art styles. I just went with the robot made of car parts angle. Even though this project took forever, I’m happy with the way that it’s turned out for what it is. I think you’ll have a better understanding of why it took so long after I add the updated images of it in it’s alternative deco.
As always, let me know what you think of this piece.
